PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF EVENTYR.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. PEDERSEN, VILHELM, Illustrator. H. C. Andersen's Eventyr. Copenhagen: C. A. Reitzel, 1850.
8vo (163 x 125 mm). Half-title, pictorial tinted frontispiece and title, 16 full-page wood engraved plates, and numerous in-text wood-engraved illustrations all after Vilhelm Pedersen. Modern green morocco-backed patterned paper-covered boards, sides very slightly rubbed, a few leaves and plate 212 possibly supplied, staining to a few leaves.
Provenance: Henrietta Nissen-Saloman (presentation inscription from Andersen).

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF EVENTYR, INSCRIBED BY ANDERSEN: "Sangerinden Fru Nissen-Salomon/ En Bouquet=Eventyr/ til venlig Erindring om Danmark/ af H. C. Andersen" ["The Singer Miss Nissen-Salomon / A bouquet-Fairytales / in kindly remembrance of Denmark / from H.C. Andersen"]. Nissen-Saloman, a Swedish opera singer and mezzo-soprano, debuted at the Théâtre Italien in Paris in 1843. After a three-year contract in Paris, she toured Europe from 1845 until 1859, performing in Italy, Russia, England, Germany and Scandinavia. She married Danish violinist and composer Siegfried Saloman in 1850.

Commissioned jointly by Reitzel and the Leipzig publisher Carl Lorck, Pedersen's illustrations are among the earliest and most recognizable, and Pedersen the first of the "official" Andersen illustrators. This edition collects 45 fairy tales including his most famous. It was issued in Leipzig in 1849, and serially in 5 installments by Reitzel in the same year, before collecting them in book form as here. Nielsen 551.
