FIRST GERMAN COLLECTED EDITION OF THE TALES.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Gesammelte Märchen. Leipzig: Carl D. Lorck, 1849.
8vo (168 x 125 mm). Wood-engraved frontispiece, wood-engraved title, fourteen wood-engraved plates and numerous wood-engraved illustrations by Eduard Kretzschmar after Vilhelm Pedersen. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, light wear, minor foxing throughout.

ANDERSEN'S COLLECTED FAIRY TALES, FIRST GERMAN EDITION, AND THE FIRST APPEARANCE WITH PEDERSEN'S ILLUSTRATIONS. Commissioned jointly by Reitzel and the Leipzig publisher Carl Lorck, Pedersen's illustrations are among the earliest and most recognizable, and Pedersen the first of the "official" Andersen illustrators. "Pedersen's simple, quiet drawings, done in a typical Biedermeier style, are viewed today as classic Andersen illustrations, along with the more artistic illustrations of his successor, Lorenz Frølich. But Pedersen's drawings, in particular, contributed to making Andersen seem more harmless than he actually is" Mylius & Nunnally, "Hans Christian Andersen," in Danish Writers from the Reformation to Decadence, 1550-1900, Gale, 2004.
