ANDERSEN ON CHARLES DICKENS.
ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. Autograph Letter Signed ("H.C. Andersen") to William Jerdan of The Literary Gazette on meeting Charles Dickens and thanking him for a glowing review, 2 pp, 8vo, integral blank, Brunsby House, Kilburn, July 20, 1847, minor dust-staining and wear, guard with very slight glue-stain.

ANDERSEN DESCRIBES HIS FIRST MEETING WITH DICKENS, which had taken place just four days earlier, on 16 July, telling William Jergen, who had arranged the meeting: "If you see Dickens or write to him, please to tell him how glad I am to find him just as pictured him to myself; I was so delighted to meet him that I quite forgot to deliver a message from the Dutch author van der Vliet & must beg you to inform Dickens that a letter & some books have been sent to him." In his diary, Andersen wrote of their meeting "as we spoke on the verandah, tears came to my eyes."
Andersen begins the letter with glowing thanks for Jergen's review in the Literary Gazette (July 17, 1847): "I have read your notice of my book, your description of my personality! tears have started into my eyes in doing so! I understand how good you are towards me, how much of your own heart lies therein! I feel depressed & yet elevated! god has been infinitely gracious towards me, may he bless you, at [sic] you have gladdened me! Thank for your warm-heartedness, thanks for your Friendship. I must strive to deserve it! oh that I could express to you my feelings my thoughts upon paper, as you have written it, but I can not!..." Andersen's elation, according to a letter he wrote the following day to Henriette Wulff, "I am compared in my personality to Jenny Lind, at this moment the greatest compliment; I am sending you the Literary Gazette in which you can read it ... it is incredible how my writings are known and read in England and Scotland!" And continues with news of meeting Dickens.
Famously, Andersen would return to stay with Dickens himself ten years later, invited for one week and staying for five, driving Dickens and his family to distraction. A wonderful Andersen letter on the cusp of his success in the English-speaking world and a rare first-hand description of his first meeting with Charles Dickens.
