TO ANDERSEN FROM HIS ENGLISH TRANSLATOR.

BONER, CHARLES. 1815-1870. Autograph Letter Signed ("Charles Boner") to Hans Christian Andersen arranging a meeting to obtain for Andersen an autograph of Sir Walter Scott, 2 pp, bifolium, 185 x 115 mm, 54 Charlotte Street, Portland Place, [London,] Saturday Morning [July 10, 1847,] remnants of seal to verso of 2nd leaf, tipped into paper board portfolio, with supporting bibliographic material.
Provenance: Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020).

AN INTERESTING LETTER TO ANDERSEN FROM HIS ENGLISH TRANSLATOR CHARLES BONER. Received by Andersen while in London June 1847, Boner is attempting to arrange a meeting with [John Gibson] Lockhart, Walter Scott's biographer and son-in-law, in order to obtain a Scott autograph. Scott had been a hero to the young Andersen as a budding writer, to the point that he borrowed the name for his pseudonym in publishing his first book, an amalgamation of Shakespeare and Scott ("William Christian Walter"). Boner was one of a handful of translators in 1846 who played a pivotal role in bringing Andersen's work to the English language market.
