THREE EARLY COLLECTIONS OF FAIRY TALES IN ENGLISH:

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. 1. A Danish Story-Book. Translated by Charles Boner. London: Joseph Cundall, 1846.
8vo. 4 lithographed plates, including frontispiece, by Count Pocci. Publisher's blue cloth, covers elaborately ruled in blind, upper cover and spine gilt lettered. Some light wear to extremities, some light staining.

THE SECOND APPEARANCE OF ANDERSEN'S TALES IN ENGLISH, AND THE FIRST FROM CHARLES BONER, including the first appearances in English of "The Ugly Duckling" ("The Ugly Duck"), Boner's edition includes 12 tales (2 more than Howitt's edition) translated from German (Howitt's was from the original Danish). "The earliest collections in Danish are of the utmost rarity; and the English translations in 1846 and 1847 are almost as rare" (Muir, p. 52).

2. The Ugly Duck and Other Tales. Translated by Charles Boner. London: Grant and Griffith, 1848.
8vo. 4 hand-colored lithographed plates, including frontispiece, by Count Pocci. Publisher's red cloth, covers elaborately ruled in blind, upper cover and spine gilt lettered, edges gilt. Some wear to extremities, dampstaining to rear cover, endpapers, and occasional page edge, some soiling.

Essentially a reprint of A Danish Story-Book, with new title page and the stories re-arranged.

3. Tales for the Young. London: James Burns, 1847.
8vo. 4 tinted lithographed plates, including frontispiece. Blue cloth, covers ruled and decorated in blind, spine gilt lettered and decorated. Rear spine hinge split, cocked, soiling.
