FIRST ENGLISH APPEARANCE OF "THE SNOW QUEEN."

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. The Shoes of Fortune and Other Tales. London: Chapman and Hall, 1847.
8vo (173 x 111 mm). Lithographed frontispiece ("Kay and Gerda" from "The Snow Queen"), 3 lithographed plates, wood engraved illustrations in text. Publisher's green cloth, gilt.
Provenance: Elizabeth Coote (gift inscription from CTC, dated "Xmas 1847").

FIRST EDITION OF THIS COLLECTION, INCLUDING THE FIRST ENGLISH APPEARANCES OF "THE SNOW QUEEN" AND "THE RED SHOES." With Andersen's international popularity exploding, the English market took notice beginning in 1846 with the publication of five collections in English translation. The Shoes of Fortune was the fifth, appearing in December 1846, but was the first to contain Andersen's classic "The Snow Queen," providing the source material for Disney's Frozen. "The earliest collections in Danish are of the utmost rarity; and the English translations in 1846 and 1847 are almost as rare" (Muir, Early English Children's Books 1600-1900, p 52).
