AMERICAN EDITION OF HOWITT'S FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. MARY HOWITT, translator. Wonderful Stories for Children. New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1846.
8vo. Publisher's slate cloth decorated in gilt and blind, central gilt vignette stamp on upper cover. Lower joint separated, some wear to extremities, some internal dampstaining.
Provenance: Ann Johns Close (bookplate).

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES, preceded by the first English edition of Mary Howitt's translation published in the same year (see preceding lots), and with the author's last name incorrectly spelled "Anderson" on title page. Howitt and her husband socialized with literary figures of the day, including Dickens, Tennyson, and the Wordsworths, and she wrote her first tales for children in 1837. In the 1840s, while living in Heidelberg, Howitt learned Danish so she could translate Andersen's works, and this collection includes "Thumbelina" and "The Constant Tin Solider," plus 8 other tales.
