STEINLEN CHARCOAL DRAWING FROM THE SNOW QUEEN.

STEINLEN, THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE. 1859-1923. Charcoal drawing for Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, charcoal on paper, 440 x 396 mm, two figures following a troll into a snowfield, trimmed to the black border and float mounted, framed.

Steinlen was one of the most prolific and popular of the French poster artists of the Art Nouveau movement. He is best known for his iconic poster for the cabaret "Le Chat Noir," in his home neighborhood of Montmartre. "The Snow Queen" is one of Andersen's most enduring tales, and was adapted by Disney into the smash hit Frozen.
