LEFLER ILLUSTRATION FOR ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES.

LEFLER, HEINRICH. 1863-1919. The Nightingale. Original illustration art, watercolor over pencil on paper, 230 x 180 mm, laid down on card, unsigned, inscribed in pencil on verso of card "Die Nachtigall / Juni." Matted.

Lefler's illustration for Andersen's "The Nightingale" was included in Andersen-Kalender 1911, Zwölf Märchen, Illustriert von Heinrich Lefler und Joseph Urban, nacherzählt von Hugo Salus, published by M. Munk in Stuttgart in 1910. This image appeared for the month of July, despite being marked as June on the verso.

Heinrich Lefler was one of the great decorative artists of the Vienna secession, and a founder of the Hagenbund. He worked closely with his brother-in-law Joseph Urban, who provided the decorative borders for these watercolors when they appeared in Calendar.
