HOYTEMA ILLUSTRATION FOR THE UGLY DUCKLING.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. HOYTEMA, THEO VAN, illustrator. "But winter passed away at last...." Original illustration art, ink and watercolors on paper, being the page design for p 28 of The Ugly Duckling, approximately 275 x 195 mm, signed "T. van Hoytema" in pencil at lower left, with hand-written English text at right center. Light fading to watercolors. Matted and framed.

Van Hoytema's illustrated edition of The Ugly Duckling was first published in Dutch in 1893, then in English in London in 1894. Here, the hand-drawn page layout has manuscript English text: "But winter past [sic] away at last and spring came back,...." In the published English edition, the text was in letterpress.

Van Hoytema (1863-1917) was the most significant Dutch designer and lithographer at the end of the nineteenth century. A founder of the Art Nouveau movement in the Netherlands, Van Hoytema's lithography is still considered the best work produced there, and his The Ugly Duckling one of his most important works. "The real break-through book for Hoytema, however, was Het leelijke jonge Eendje, Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling, of 1893, in which a balance between close observation and cloisonné-like stylization is fully achieved and the hand-written text is beautifully integrated with the drawn images" (Ackley, "A Hoytema Archive in Boston," Print Quarterly, 2011).
