First series only, comprising 3 pamphlets in one volume. 8vo (167 x 110 mm). Half-titles to parts 1 & 3. Contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards. Some light wear, internal spotting and a few stains.
Provenance: Early gift inscription dated Christmas 1845.

Second printing of the first pamphlet, FIRST EDITION PAMPHLETS II and III OF ANDERSEN'S SECOND CYCLE OF FAIRY TALES, including "The Ugly Duckling," "The Nightingale," "The Snow Queen," and "The Red Shoes." "It was not until 1843/4 that the appearance of 'The Ugly Duckling' swept [Andersen's fairy tales] into general favour" (PMM 299). Nielsen 428n, 429-432, 454, 455-456, 467, 468-472.
