SECOND SERIES OF ANDERSEN'S FIRST CYCLE OF FAIRY TALES.

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Eventyr, fortalte for Born. Andet Bind [Ny Samling]. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzel, 1842 [1838-1841].
Second series, comprising 3 pamphlets in one volume. 12mo (123 x 75 mm). Half-title, volume title (dated 1842), dedication, volume contents, text; pamphlet title (dated 1839), text; pamphlet title (dated 1842). Modern morocco, marbled paper boards.

FIRST EDITIONS OF THE SECOND SERIES OF ANDERSEN'S FIRST CYCLE OF FAIRY TALES, all apparent first printings, but with the second pamphlet with "Søster" on p 52 (indicating a 2nd printing, although meeting ALL other first printing points), so a mixed issue. The three pamphlets containing the second part of Andersen's first cycle of fairy tales were issued beginning in 1838, with the third pamphlet printed in December 1841 (but dated 1842). These represent the first appearance in print of "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," "The Wild Swan," "The Flying Trunk," "Ole Lukøje" [variously translated as "The Sandman" or "Willie Winkie"], and seven other fairy tales. It's possible Reitzel had additional stock of the first printing around when the 2nd printing appeared in 1846, and the final gathering of the 2nd pamphlet got mixed in with the first printing sheets, resulting in this bibliographic oddity. ). "During Andersen's lifetime 162 of his Fairy Tales were published, but the scarcest and most difficult to obtain are these ... little pamphlets. We do not know exactly how many, or how few, copies were printed, but we do know that no copy with all the title pages and tables of contents has ever been offered for sale by any dealer or at any auction sale" (Hersholt p 25).
