FIRST APPEARANCE OF "THE GALOSHES OF FORTUNE."

ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Tre Digtninger af H.C. Andersen. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzel, 1838.
8vo. Later boards, morocco title label to upper cover.

FIRST EDITION OF THE EARLY "THREE POETICAL WORKS," containing "Galoshes of Fortune," considered Andersen's first fairy tale for adults, alongside the one act play in verse "The True Soldier" and the poem "That Was Done by the Zombie." In a 1838 letter to Henriette Hanck, Andersen acknowledged that the tale, the first he split into chapters, was "not for children" owing more to the "Hoffmann-like imagination" of A Walking Tour than to the Tales, told for Children. "

The publication of "The Galoshes of Fortune" deepened a rift with a young Søren Kierkegaard in Andersen's (purposeful) portrayal of an exotic bird which babbles on philosophically "but just as incomprehensible as the chirping of a canary." Kierkegaard responded in his first printed work in the same year, Af en endnu Levendes Papirer ("From the Papers of One Still Living"), a withering critique of Andersen's work, but more so of his life and character. Nielsen 320, 321-323.
