ORIGINAL PORTRAIT OF H.C. ANDERSEN.

OAKLEY, THORNTON. 1881-1953. Pen-and-ink bust portrait of Hans Christian Andersen, signed below "T. Oakley/1938" for Scandinavia Beckons, approximately 145 x 83 mm, on 365 x 290 mm board, pinholes in the corners, a few production notes in pencil, some fingermarks, tack marks at corners.
WITH: "Odense: H.C. Andersen's House," original pen-and-ink drawing for Scandinavia Beckons, signed beneath "T. Oakley/ 1938," production notes in pencil, some smudges and fingermarks, tack marks at corners.
WITH: LAWRENCE, T. CROMWELL. D. 1901. Untitled (Hans Christian Andersen). Ink on card over pencil, 395 x 280 mm, card trimmed to a curved line at top. Browning at edges, a few tack marks at edges, pencil marks and smudges.

Thornton Oakley was a native of Pittsburgh who attended the University of Pennsylvania and was associated with Howard Pyle and the Brandywine School. He produced illustrations for Harper's, Century, Collier's Weekly, and other magazines and books. He is also known for his murals and paintings of American industrial scenes. After marrying, he and his wife Amy traveled extensively and published illustrated travelogues.
