Have we taken the wild out of dog? 'The burrow' aims to re-nature our domesticated animals by giving some of their wild back. We studied a variety of architectural forms that occur within nature and are created by the wildlife inhabiting them. We looked the way dogs pace in a spiral to curl up or how foxes dig deep into the earth and noticed how each mammal finds a space to sleep and feel secure that echoes life in the womb. We translated our concept into a 3D model, carving and scraping away sections of the interior in a burrowing like fashion.
The negative space inside 'the burrow' is an organic tactile place for the dog to feel comfortable and secure while being truer to its natural environment in the wild.
The burrow' splits in half to produce two separate open sleeping nests.
Our kennel reflects our ethos – through working collaboratively, designing dreams in all their detail and championing sustainability.
We chose substances that were natural and safe for our canine clients and reused materials from the interior design and construction industries including layers of 100% recycled wool flooring underlay and acoustic felt paired with timber, brass and leather.
