Dogs dig nature. Oh yes, they literally dig it. And they are at their happiest when producing mounds of earth, blissfully unaware that they are stockpiling a construction material as old as civilization – clay.
Taking this as a creative leaping-off point, Hall + Bednarczyk's kennel is a one-off terracotta form inspired by traditional clay coiled pots - versatile vessels that have been used for millennia and are suitable for indoor or outdoor placement. We wanted to balance elegance with down to earth practicality, creating a distinctive kennel that can handle a good hosing down when necessary.
We handcrafted the coils and worked up the form under the expert guidance of Weinerberger Brick's in-house sculptor, Ian Martinson. Generally accustomed to creating bespoke finials, he gave us a crash course in clay architecture. To enhance durability, the kennel was placed in Weinerberger's drying oven for a month and then fired for a week in one of their commercial brick ovens, sharing space with half a million bricks, thanks to a remarkably patient factory manager.
Weighing in at 15kg, Kennel Vessel is strong and built to last, while being ideally sized to accommodate Goodwoof's 2025 celebrated breed, the dachshund.
