Zak uses analogue formats with the intent to preserve the indexicality and fidelity of his subjects. Creating bold and vibrant images that seek to turn light itself in the subject of his images, not just as means to view the subject.
'Goraiko' simply translated means 'the honourable arrival of light', but culturally it expresses gratitude and awe at viewing the rising sun.
Mount Fuji is tied incomparably to the cultural significance of this word. Fuji's ascent being Japan's most sacred pilgrimage, and its sunrise Japan's most sacred Goraiko.
This photograph aims to be testament to the cultural belief that one can cross the boundary from profane to sacred on ascent, and then bring the sacred back down with you to the world below.
