Footnotes

This work came from a series investigating the architectural works of George Chakhava (Georgian, 1923-2007), focusing around his iconic 'Ministry of Transportation' building in Tbilisi, Georgia; more broadly it explored the dissonance between Utopian constructed space and lived experience.

It channels the emotional weight of Soviet Brutalism through a uniquely sculptural lens. Unlike the monolithic uniformity typical of the era, Chakhava's interlocking concrete volumes evoke a sense of surreal dislocation - at once imposing and strangely organic. The work invites reflection on the psychological landscape of Soviet architecture, where bold form becomes both a symbol of power and a vessel for ontological reflection.
