In the form of a powder horn with suspension chain, the lid engraved with the Duke of Richmond crest, the interior of the lid gilt-washed and inscribed Presented to the / Royal Sussex L. J. Militia / BY / Colonel the Duke of Richmond. / K.G., the rim of lid inscribed VAUGHAN & Co. 39 & 40 Strand.

This crest is the highly complexed armorial of Charles Gordon-Lennox (1791-1860) 5th Duke of Richmond (Peerage of England), of Lennox (Peerage of Scotland) and d'Aubigny (Nobility of France). In 1829 he was appointed Knight of the Garter. The family continue to be seated at Goodwood, Chichester, Sussex.

Born Charles Lennox son and heir of Charles Lennox (1764-1819) 4th Duke of Richmond, Lennox and d'Aubigny by Lady Charlotte Gordon (1768-1842) eldest child of Alexander Gordon (1743-1827), 4th Duke of Gordon, and his wife Jane Maxwell. In 1836 he adopted the name Gordon on the death of his maternal uncle and his inheritance of the Gordon estates.

In 1817 he married he married Lady Caroline Paget (1797–1874), a daughter of Henry Paget (1768-1854), 1st Marquess of Anglesey by his wife Lady Caroline Elizabeth Villiers (1774-1835) daughter of George Busy Villiers (1735-1805) 4th Earl of Jersey, by whom he had five sons and five daughters.
