These types of production molds were used in doll factories to create the heads. Vinyl, polymer, clay or other mediums were put in the molds, and then the heads themselves were treated with skin tones, eyes, and hair. With the advent of polymer and plastic materials in the 20th century, doll making largely shifted to these materials and away from the porcelain dolls of the 19th century. The cost, ease of manufacture, and durability of plastic materials meant new types of dolls could be mass produced at a lower price.
