Footnotes

Piero Fornasetti was an Italian engraver, interior decorator, and artist. Born in Milan, Italy, in 1913, he has become one of the most famous Italian designers of the 20th century. In 1930, he opened the Art Printshop and worked with iconic Italian Gio Ponti on countless projects; from there, Fornasetti Atelier was born and its residence was established on Via Manzoni, in the luxurious and playful tradition of Milan.

Fornasetti drew from a rich cultural lexicon of symbols and icons, using repeticious designs of suns, harlequins, architecture, and the zodiac. It is said that after seeing an image of opera singer Lina Cavalieri in the newspaper, he became obsessed with her pensive expression, and her visage became a design toughstone. He used her image across numerous works, including a series of 350 individual plates called "Tema e Variazioni" (Theme and Variations).

At once sophisticated and whimsical, Fornasetti design is instantly recognizable and carries a long tradition of Italian design and sensibility.
