The first such commercially mass-produced crash dummy was invented by Samuel Alderson. Dubbed "Sierra Sam," the dummy was introduced in 1949 to test aircraft ejection seats, aviation helmets, and pilot safety harnesses. Many other crash test dummies have been produced since then, with more complexities and made to test a variety of hazards, such as car accidents, nuclear exposure, and more. They have become pop culture icons in their own right.
Fully articulated so that the figure could be placed behind a car wheel or in an airplane seat, these dummies were made to be battered so that the effects of such disasters did not have to be measured on humans or animals. The humble crash test dummy would prove to save countless lives as safety measures have been improved by scientists' abilities to observe the dummies in action.
