Ellen Carey is a rebellious alchemist, a contemporary artist that blends 19th century photographic practice, with 20th century innovations, to create 21st century artworks. Carey continually develops camera and camera-less techniques in the pursuit of the abstract. The work is born from discovery and risk. Earlier works are recognizable as images of a person—Carey herself—but with applications of paint and collage they soon slip into a geometric kaleidoscope of the unknown. Starting with Polaroid 20x24, from the 1990s onwards, Carey's works are not representations of something else, like a boat, tree or a person. The images are not signs to be read. Carey's works are perfect presentations of themselves. We clearly see the actual subject in any photograph – the imprint of light.
