Born on August 29, 1958, in the picturesque village of Tsinandali in Georgia's Telavi district, Shalva Matuashvili established himself as a significant figure in Georgian arts through his parallel careers as an artist and educator.
After completing his education at the prestigious Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1980, Matuashvili quickly rose to positions of artistic leadership. From 1988 to 1991, he served as head of the creative painting workshop at the Georgian National Gallery's Artist's House, guiding the development of emerging talent while continuing to refine his own artistic practice.
Matuashvili's commitment to nurturing the next generation of Georgian artists became evident through his extensive teaching career. During the same period (1988-1992), he taught drawing, painting, and composition at Sulkhan-Saba State Pedagogical University, sharing his technical expertise and artistic vision with students at the university level.
Following a period focused on his personal artistic development, Matuashvili returned to education in 2006, joining the faculty at his alma mater, the Tbilisi State Art Academy. The following year, he began teaching at the Fine and Applied Arts Centre at Ilia State University, where his contributions to art education were recognized with his appointment as professor in 2016, a position he continues to hold.
