A HUANGHUALI DOCUMENT CHEST WITH PAKTONG MOUNTS, XIANG

18th/19th century
The rectangular box with superbly figured wood top and sides, carved with a moulded edge at the top and bottom sections and inlaid at the front with a paktong lockplate and a ruyi cloud-shaped hasp, the sides reinforced at the edges with paktong strips running the length of each corner under flush-fitted cloud-shaped brackets on the four top edges, the lower section fitted at the sides with square-shaped bail handles.
43.2cm (17in) long x 19.3cm (7 5/8in) high x 23.3cm (9 1/4in) deep.

The style of the present box follows classic forms that emerged in the Ming dynasty. See an earlier huanghuali document box, Ming dynasty, illustrated in The Chuang Family Bequest of Fine Ming and Qing Furniture in the Shanghai Museum, Hong Kong, 1998, no.49.
