A LARGE BAMBOO FIGURE OF SHOULAO

19th century
The deity crisply carved with large domed forehead above content expression with finely incised beard, clad in long flowing robes, his right hand clasping a staff with peaches, the top separately made, his left hand carrying a lingzhi fungus.

十九世紀 竹雕壽老像

The figure represented in the present lot is Shoulao, also known as the God of Longevity, associated with the Canopus star of the South Pole. See a similar but smaller bamboo carving of Shoulao, Qing dynasty, in the collection of the Suzhou Museum, illustrated by Jin Weinuo, Complete Works of Chinese Art: Bamboo, Bone, Ivory, Horn and Enamel (中國美術全集:竹木骨牙角雕琺瑯器), Hefei, 2010, p.54. Compare with a similar but smaller bamboo carving of Shoulao, Qing dynasty, illustrated in Ming and Qing Chinese Arts from the C.P.Lin Collection, Hong Kong, 2014, p.316, no.191.
