The Qing Court, deeply interested in Western technologies, established the Imperial Glassworks (Yangxindian Glass Workshop) in the Kangxi period, but it was during the Qianlong emperor's rule that production peaked. Artisans, many trained by Jesuits, experimented with new techniques such as overlay carving (liuyeli), enamelling, and faceted cutting, producing exquisite glassware in a dazzling array of colours, including ruby red, emerald green, and opaque white imitating jade. These glass pieces, often shaped into vases, snuff bottles, and scholar's objects, reflected the emperor's taste for refinement and innovation while demonstrating the fusion of Chinese and European influences in Qing Court art.
