The form of this box, along with the stylised floral scrolling adorning its sides, draws inspiration from earlier Ming dynasty cloisonné boxes produced between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. A prototype, mid-16th century, can be found in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, illustrated in Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, New York, 2011, p.245, no.42.

Compare with a related circular cloisonné enamel box and cover with flowers and rocks, Kangxi six-character mark and of the period, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels, 2, Beijing, 2011, p.33, no.6.
