AN INSCRIBED BAMBOO BRUSHPOT, BITONG

Signed Dongjiang, cyclically dated Yichou chunri, corresponding to the spring of 1745, 1805 or 1865
The cylindrical vessel in the shape of a bamboo section with nodes, the exterior carved in relief with a praying mantis resting on a leafy bamboo sprig, accompanied by inscriptions dated to Yichou chunri.

11.8cm (4 5/8in) high.

十八/十九世紀 竹雕竹葉螳螂圖詩文筆筒
「乙丑春日製」「峝江」款

The poetic inscription reads:

迎風挺立自蕭然,
老節新枝骨慾仙,
任是白雲遮不住,
狂梢依舊上青天。

Which may be translated as:

'Standing tall against the wind, calm and serene, the bones of old joints and new branches aspire to transcendence. Even when white clouds try to conceal, the wild tips still soar towards the blue sky.'

See a boxwood brushpot similarly decorated with bamboo and praying mantis, 1793 or 1853, which was sold at Bonhams London, 7 November 2024, lot 54.
