A LARGE BAMBOO 'EIGHT IMMORTALS' PARFUMIER

Footnotes

十八世紀 竹雕八仙人物香筒

Parfumiers of this size are rare. The incense would be placed at the tip of the lower end, allowing the fragrant smoke to waft gracefully through the perforations. This effect would beautifully complement the theme of the Eight Daoist Immortals carved around the exterior, as if bringing their ethereal presence to life amidst the curling tendrils of smoke. See a related bamboo parfumier of similar proportions but carved with a scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber, Kangxi, illustrated by Sydney L. Moss Ltd., Between Heaven and Earth: Secular and Divine Figural Images in Chinese Paintings and Objects, London, 1988, no.25.

Compare with a related carved bamboo parfumier, Kangxi, which was sold at Bonhams London, 11 November 2024, lot 265.
