A HUANGHUALI DRESSING CASE WITH FOLDING MIRROR STAND, JINGJIA

18th/19th century
The folding mirror stand on top of a dressing case with double doors opening to reveal five drawers, all supported on four bracket feet, the lattice panel of the mirror stand carved with chilong and prunus, the bottom of the stand with a lotus leaf-shaped support for the mirror, the corners and edges decorated and reinforced with metal straps.
Closed: 25.5cm (10in) high x 40.7cm (16in) wide x 40.8cm (16in) deep.

十八/十九世紀 黃花梨鏡箱

Mirror stands and chests of this type including drawers for cosmetics and jewellery, were very popular as dowry gifts. Compare with a related mirror stand and chest, Ming dynasty, in the Wang Shixiang collection, illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Mingshi jiaju zhenshang (明式家具珍賞), Hong Kong, 1985, pp.240-241.
