Footnotes

This is the crest and motto associated with arms of WALDIE (sometimes WALDY) family, who in the period of assay were owners of the Hendersyde Park estate in Roxburghshire. The current lot was possibly the property of John WALDIE Esq. (1781-1862), a bachelor who is described as a dilettante, theatre critic and writer. His father was George WALDIE (1760-1826), who had married Ann ORMSTON (born 1747) and purchased the estate in the late eighteenth century and it was he who was later responsible for the considerable development of the site, which included in 1802/3 the addition of a mansion. On the death of John WALDIE in 1862 the estate passed to the descendants of his sister Maria Jane (1787-1865), who had married Richard GRIFFITHS.

Blazon of the crest: a dove in the beak an olive branch all proper.

Motto: FIDELIS

With thanks to Roger Whitworth in the research of the crest and motto.
