Footnotes

Set during the Peninsula War (1808-1814), Charles Lever drew on his own experiences and friends when writing Charles O'Malley, The Irish Dragoon. Originally published in monthly instalments from March 1840 to November 1841, Rackham's illustrated edition was published in 1897 and amply depicted 'the vivid, rollicking adventures of military life and hard-drinking fox-hunting Irish society.' This was one of his earliest illustrated books and consisted of sixteen black and white illustrations.
