Cecil Beaton had a close relationship with the Duke of Windsor and his wife, Wallis Simpson. He took many portraits of the couple, including on the day prior to their wedding in 1937 at Château de Candé, near Tours, France. This was particularly significant as it was the Duke's desire to marry Mrs Simpson that ultimately forced him to abdicate from the throne and made his younger brother King.
A series of similar portraits taken at this time can be found at the National Portrait Gallery.
