Cecil Beaton's costume designs for the iconic 1956 Broadway production of My Fair Lady catapulted him into a new world of critical acclaim. Starring Julia Andrews as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, Beaton designed over 150 costumes for the show which, at the end of its run in 1962, had become the highest grossing Broadway show in history. Scouted by Lerner and Loewe his 'look' was described as being 'such that it is difficult to know whether he designed the Edwardian era or whether the Edwardian era designed him.'
In 1958 it was then opened in London's West End with the original leading cast before its inevitable adaptation into film with Audrey Hepburn taking over as the leading lady. My Fair Lady won Beaton two Oscars for costume and art direction and ensured that his name became immortalised in the world of costume design.
