Released in 1978, this was the second film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Raymond Chandler published in 1939. Directed by Michael Winner the film starred Robert Mitchum as the detective Philip Marlowe, as well as featuring Sarah Miles, Candy Clark, Joan Collins, James Stewart and Oliver Reed. Filmed in London rather than in Los Angeles as the original version was, it centred on the private detective Philip Marlow being hired to uncover a blackmail plot on General Sternwood played by James Stewart.
