Footnotes

Death Wish can be considered to be Michael Winner's most successful film. Based on the novel by Brian Garfield, the first in the series follows the character of Paul Kersey as he takes the law into his own hands following the attack and subsequent death of his wife at the hands of gang members. Charles Bronson was cast in the leading role and this catapulted his career in America and he went on to experience great popularity over the next two decades.

The success of the first film saw Winner go on to direct Death Wish II and Death Wish III, with the two subsequent films in the franchise directed by J. Lee Thompson and Allan A. Goldstein, and the 2018 remake by Eli Roth. In total the series made $87 million against a combined budget of $61 million.
