The 1959 production of Der Rosenkavalier was the last time that Messel worked with Glyndebourne to design the costumes and sets. The opera by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was staged in tribute to Carl Ebert who retired that year after 25 years as the director of Glyndebourne.
The present lot contains designs for the two key female characters of the opera: the Feldmarschallin and Sophie, who find themselves in a peculiar love triangle. The Feldmarschallin's young lover, Octavian, is sent to deliver the silvered rose to Sophie as a sign of her engagement to older Baron Ochs. Inevitably, it is Octavian and Sophie that fall in love, and the fall out in the opera ensues.
