A similar version from Der Rosenkavalier can be found in the Glyndebourne archive collections.
The 1959 production of Der Rosenkavalier was the last time that Messel worked with Glyndebourne to design the costumes and sets. The opera by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was staged in tribute to Carl Ebert who retired that year after 25 years as the director of Glyndebourne.
The silvered rose in the production is a key prop throughout the opera. It is the traditional symbol of engagement, here used to signify the union between Baron Ochs and Sophie, and is used as the catalyst for much of the drama in the opera.
