Beaton was brought on to design the costumes for the 1943 revival of this George Bernard Shaw play, first performed in 1920 at the Garrick Theatre in New York. This revival was staged at the Cambridge Theatre, London and saw the return of Edith Evans. In contrary to her previous performance in this play (where she played Lady Utterwood), here she was the character of Hesione Hushabye.
Beaton discusses his meetings and costume fittings with Evans in detail in The Years Between 1939-44 ,(Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1965), and the current costume for which the present design relates to is illustrated p.225.
