Beaton designed sets and around 400 costumes for this production of Turandot, an opera of love and revenge. Originally performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, it was then reproduced in London at the Royal Opera House. Of his designs, the critic Philip Hope-Wallace wrote that they were 'superb costumes, of original fantasy and high skill.
Produced by Yoshio Aoyama and set in Ancient China, Beaton drew on his photographs of China taken during the Second World War as well as source material of Boucher's chinoiserie tapestries at the British Museum.
