Antinous was the beloved companion of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who deified him after his untimely death by drowning in the Nile at the age of twenty. Revered for his youthful beauty, Antinous became a powerful symbol of idealized youth in the Roman world. Sculptures, coins, and artworks survive depicting him, often portrayed with divine attributes. Owing to the location of his death, he was frequently shown in the guise of Osiris, the Egyptian god associated with the Nile and rebirth.
