Footnotes

Provenance
John Pemberton Heywood, Cloverley Hall, Whitchurch, Shropshire (no.19 in 1873 inventory);
Heywood-Lonsdale, Shavington House, Market Drayton, by 1919;
Lt. Col. A. Heywood-Lonsdale; by whom offered, Sale, Christie's, London, 24 October 1958, lot 100 (as 'S. Scott, A View of Lindsey House, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea with numerous figures and boats and an artists sketching on a wall');
Sale, Christie's, London, British Pictures 1500-1850, 23 November 2005, lot 57, where purchased by the present owner.

This view was painted from the recently constructed Battersea Bridge (c.1771) which can be seen peeking out from the left-hand side of the foreground. Built in 1674, and still standing today, Lindsey House is considered to be the oldest house in Kensington and Chelsea and 'shows a continuous history from the time of Sir Thomas More' (Survey of London, Chelsea ii, iv, London, 1913, p.37). Built on the site of More's gardens overlooking the Thames, it was extensively remodelled in 1750 and subsequently split into seven separate dwellings. This can be seen in the present work, which shows the seven separate entrance gates.
