Based on the 1848 novel by Alexandre Dumas fils (1924-1895) which was inspired by Dumas' relationship with Marie Duplessis. The initial heroine of Marguerite became known as Camille in American adaptations, which includes the present design for Alicia Markova as the leading lady for John Taras' ballet. Both Markova's performance and Beaton's designs were highly praised.
Beaton later worked on another adapation of Dumas' novel, titled Marguerite and Armand and choreographed by Frederick Ashton in 1963. See lots 33 to 37 for examples of these later costume designs.
