A pair of 16th century carved oak panels, one with a Romayne-type portrait roundel

Each of rectangular form, one carved with a central roundel profile portrait of a bearded gentleman looking to sinister within a foliate border, below a further profile portrait of a similar bearded gentleman also looking to sinister wearing a feather trimmed hat and flanked by similar curling feathers, and above a skull, twin bones and crossed leafy branch motif, the other panel with a bolding undulating leafy branch interspaced with a rampant lion and unicorn, the rear with painted initials J P?, W B,

Footnotes

Popular in the 16th century, Romayne style profile portrait panels carved in low relief were originally used alongside plain and carved panels to clad interior panelled walls, as well as doors, cabinets and furniture. Comparable examples can be found in the Victorian & Albert Museum.
