Footnotes

Provenance
Until now the offered lot formed part of a collection of furniture and works of art, ranging from the 15th century to the 18th century, which furnished an early 15th century Sussex manor house. This collection was amassed predominantly over the course of the last quarter of the previous century; it includes a number of rare and, in a few instances, very early pieces.

A comparable chair (one of a pair), which is dated 1665-1670, is illustrated in G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, 1987, Oxford, fig. 6, p. 23. It is described therein as being of Yorkshire origin, however thee are also closely related examples of this type which can be found defined as having been made in Derbyshire so often it can be difficult to tell them apart.
