An oak 'trestle-end' stool

Probably and apparently first half 16th century
Of typical form, the overhanging top above a shaped frieze, on two notch-carved shaped v-frame end supports, 64.5cm wide x 28cm deep x 47cm high, (25in wide x 11in deep x 18 1/2in high)

Footnotes

Provenance
Property from the collection of Adrian Bishop, owner of Combe Cottage Antiques in Castle Combe, Wiltshire.
Following his retirement from the RAF in 1964 Adrian Bishop and his wife Brenda set up the business the following year, trading until 2001.

A similar 'trestle-end' stool to the present lot is illustrated in P. Macquoid, 1989, originally published 1904-1908, London, fig. 60a, p. 37. Interestingly although not given a specific age of manufacture by the author, this comparable example is described therein as a 'Gothic stool', which certainly implies a date of execution which is prior to the Elizabeth I period.
