Head of Sale Carpets and Tapestries

Sale Coordinator for Furniture, Sculpture, Rugs & Tapestries
Provenance
Property from the collection of Adrian Bishop, owner of Combe Cottage Antiques in Castle Combe, Wiltshire.
Following his retirement from the RAF in 1964 Adrian Bishop and his wife Brenda set up the business the following year, trading until 2001.
Trumpet-based candlesticks were produced in brass, pewter, silver and earthenware, predominantly between 1650 and 1680. Their inclusion in contemporary art of the period, such as Edward Collier's (c.1640-1706) Vantiasi (Museum Bredius, The Hague) alongside rare and valuable collectables, testifies to their desirability.
See Eloy Koldeweij, The English Candlestick: 500 years in the development of base-metal candlesticks 1425-1925, London, 2001, cats., 17-21.
