An extremely rare 17th century German turned and carved treen pedestal cup containing multiple inner cups, with original case

Circa 1620-50, possibly Berchtesgaden, Bavaria
Of goblet form in turned and carved fruitwood, the plain conical bowl inset with a series of concentric paper-thin nesting cups, on a part stained carved and ring turned knopped pedestal stem and spreading circular base, the turned cylindrical case with banded carved decoration and screw-top lid and similarly carved and pierced knopped inner lid, the underside of the case incised XXXXX XXXXX and with indistinct label, the case 20.7cm high overall

For a comparable cased cup, see the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, acc. no, 2022.89a–e (Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Acquisitions Fund, 2022).

The present lot is a rare survival from the Northern Renaissance, likely intended for display within a Kunstkammer, or art cabinet. Such virtuoso turned goblets, with their nested cups and fitted case, were prized not only for their aesthetic refinement but also for the remarkable technological innovation they embodied. As such works of this kind were celebrated as much for their ingenuity as for their beauty, reflecting the broader humanist ideal that artisanal and scientific mastery were inseparable from wisdom and virtue. The extraordinary precision required in its execution suggests the hand of a master turner, possibly active in the Alpine town of Berchtesgaden which was renowned for its turners, or perhaps in the workshop of King Christian IV of Denmark.
