John Richardson (1767-1837) developed a theatrical taste from an early age. In 1782 he joined a travelling theatre company, and eventually took over the Harlequin Public House, opposite the stage door of Drury Lane in 1796.
He later developed a highly successful touring company and the costumes used in his performances were of the finest quality. His success made him wealthy and it is recorded that his made generous gifts to charity, whilst still leaving a healthy inheritance following his death in 1837.
